THE YASSIN CHRONICLES: CHAPTER 1

Tok Yassin's father, Haji Imam Abu Bakar was from Patani, a small town in the southern part of Thailand. When he was young, he joined the rebels to fight the Siam goverment and afraid of being caught, he ran off to Mecca and stayed there for many years. When he came back, he stayed in Penang and later was appointed as Imam by the Kedah government. He was an Imam and also a Qadi. He taught religious classes. Later on he married a girl from Bandar Baru, the town officially opened by him and had five children including Tok Yassin.

When Tok Yassin grew up, he was appointed as a magistrate in Penang while his brothers became Penghulu. Some disagreement happened later and he was demoted to a Chief Clerk and moved to Alor Setar, working at the DO's office. The DO at that time was Tuan Syed Hamid, son of Wan Tam, the aunt of Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah (the current Sultan Kedah's grandfather, and the father of Almarhum Tunku Abdul Rahman).

Abdullah, the father of Tok Cik Bee was working with Wan Tam then, and after he passed away when she was 10 years old, Wan Tam adopted Tok Cik Bee. It was said that Tuan Syed Hamid was interested in Tok Cik Bee and not wanting her son to marry Tok Cik Bee, Wan Tam gave her hand to Tok Yassin instead.
